The synthetic turf industry has proven that one of its major beneficiaries is the environment.
This is done, in no small part, by providing a sustainable alternative to natural grass and the harmful side effects caused by its constant maintenance requirements. One of the most measurable “green” attributes of synthetic turf systems come from their impact on water usage. According to the Los Angeles Department of Engineering, each synthetic field saves approximately 2,480,000 gallons of water per year. This is all done without the use of pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals, nor does it require mowing.
A BASF study (validated by National Science Foundation) was conducted to compare synthetic and natural turf. The study looked at 11 environmental categories including primary energy consumption, raw material consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, ozone depletion potential, photochemical ozone creation potential, water emissions, solid waste emissions, toxicity potential, risk potential, and land use. Overall findings of the study determined that the synthetic turf systems measured significantly lower in terms of environmental impact. This is especially true when you consider the amount of use afforded by artificial turf surfaces.

When artificial turf fibers are tufted through the backing of a turf carpet, they’re loose and are easily pulled out.
The carpet must receive a secondary coating to lock those fibers in place. The coating should be strong enough to achieve 8 – 10 lbs. of tuft bind (the force required to pull out a tuft of turf). To do so in a progressive, environmentally friendly way is even better.
The Industry’s Solution:
European fields use latex. Here in the US, polyurethane is the standard.
BioCel — This bio-based polyurethane coating meets and exceeds industry tuft bind standards. BioCel is available on most AstroTurf fields. It is derived from soybean oil and displaces a large portion of the petroleum-based oils found in traditional polyurethane. BioCel polyurethane helps to support the approximately 600,000 American soybean farmers and to reduce our dependency on foreign oil.
Celceram — Celceram, a highly-refined mineral compound recycled from electrical power plants, is a key component of secondary backing systems used in many AstroTurf products. As a post-industrial, recovered product, the composition of Celceram was designed to strengthen and stabilize polyurethane turf backings, improving both performance and overall product stability.
Recycled Bottles — Some AstroTurf systems use water bottles recovered from the waste stream of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks!
