Field Replacement Program

Field Replacement Case Study

Replacing an old field is not only the safest choice for your athletes, but can do wonders for overall performance.

With a combination of superior equipment and distinctive technique, AstroTurf delivers unrivaled field replacement capabilities. Below are examples of field replacements that had a lasting impact on the faculty and students that use them.

New Braunfel Independent School District, New Braunfels, TX

Unicorn Stadium, New Braunfels Independent School District

The story began in 2008 when Unicorn Stadium received a new artificial turf field from another large synthetic turf manufacturer.

That playing surface failed prematurely, and New Braunfels ISD was forced to take legal action due to warranty issues that weren’t resolved professionally. In need of a new and reliable playing field for the stadium, the school district opened up a competitive bid which used a scorecard format to evaluate durability, safety, and quality, as well as price. When the bidding process was concluded, the AstroTurf/AstroBuilders team had the highest rated proposal and was awarded the job.

“We conducted a thorough evaluation of the different turf manufacturers as part of this process,” said Jim Streety, Athletic Director for New Braunfels ISD. ”We chose AstroTurf because their product was highly rated, a great value and because we knew from our research that they were a professional organization that would stand behind their product.”

Unicorn Stadium has been resurfaced with the new AstroTurf 3D3 synthetic turf system. The field features a large unicorn as its center-field logo. The innovative design combines three separate fibers for exceptional performance. For long-lasting aesthetics, AstroTurf 3D3 uses the High Micron monofilament fiber, which measures 365 microns thick, helping it to resist wear and tear and stand upright over time. For durability, AstroTurf adds in slit film polyethylene fibers. The 3D3 system also features AstroTurf’s RootZone® technology, a proprietary infill stabilization system invented, patented and improved upon by AstroTurf. This sub-layer of texturized fibers holds the infill in place, preventing compaction, splash, and migration. The result is a clean, consistent playing surface, which has garnered rave reviews for its performance, durability, and safety.

The new field for Unicorn Stadium is another win for Jim Streety, one of the living legends of Texas High School Football. Streety is the 4th all-time winningest coach in Texas history, racking up 343 victories during his tenures at New Braunfels High School and San Antonio Madison. The Texas High School Football Hall of Fame inductee returned to New Braunfels as Athletic Director in 2014. AstroBuilders, a Certified AstroTurf Installer, won the bid and handled the installation of the new AstroTurf surface at Unicorn Stadium.

Sierra College

Buzz Ostrom Stadium, Sierra College

The latest upgrade to the football stadium at Sierra College is definitely generating some buzz around campus.

Homer “Buzz” Ostrom Stadium now features a cutting edge field from AstroTurf, which was installed in March. It’s an impressive playing surface and one whose character is bolstered by what’s been done below the surface.

The process of replacing Buzz Ostrom Stadium’s old artificial turf started underground. Valley Precision Grading, a certified AstroTurf distributor, began by remediating the underlayment with their specialized equipment. This process ensured proper drainage and level grading. That was followed by installation of a Brock Powerbase for maximum shock absorption. And finally, the AstroTurf RootZone 3D3 Blend turf system was laid down. This is a high-end product that utilizes a specialized fiber blend for optimum performance, durability, and game-day good looks. The signature touch for this customized playing surface at “The Buzz” is the use of green encapsulated rubber infill, which ensures a vibrant and clean surface over the life of the field.

“We couldn’t be happier with the new turf installation at Buzz Ostrom Stadium,” said Lucas Moosman, Athletic Director at Sierra College. “It’s not just a replacement field, it’s a high-performance upgrade that will give our student-athletes a great place to play for years to come.”

With a combination of superior equipment and distinctive technique, VPG and AstroTurf are partnering to deliver unrivaled field replacement capabilities for Northern California. Some of their joint projects include the UC Berkley practice field and the revolutionary baseball field at Benedetti Diamond on the USF campus.

Sierra College is a highly regarded junior college that boasts unparalleled success academically and athletically in the region. The Wolverine football team regularly plays in postseason bowl games, and the program has produced multiple All-Americans, dozens of transfers to Division I powerhouse schools, and even a few guys starring on Sundays in the NFL.
