The New Balance field hockey venue at Boston University is an ingenious use of space on a crowded urban campus. Situated atop an elevated parking deck in the middle of BU’s campus, the project’s execution required a commensurate degree of ingenuity. The unloading of trucks had to be done with great care and logistical precaution. Due to the heavily trafficked environment and space limitations, complex logistics had to be managed. Only one truck was permitted at a time. Each truckload required a police detail and traffic direction. Trucks had to be scheduled around daily traffic conditions and space availability, requiring clear communication with trucking companies, campus officials, and police details. All of this was done in adherence to Union labor requirements, matching each AstroTurf specialist with local Boston residents at a one-to-one ratio. Moreover, due to the fact that the field was built atop an elevated parking deck that sat adjacent to other buildings and heavily trafficked roads, extreme precautions were undertaken to ensure that no debris blew from the field site to the street or buildings below.

AstroTurf received the project 2-3 weeks behind schedule due to delays in other contractors’ work. The result was a compressed construction schedule. Crews completed a 16 day schedule in just eight days. The field was delivered in time for BU’s first scheduled event.
