The two most commonly used synthetic turf fibers today are polyethylene and nylon. Nylon fibers, both textured and non-textured are the strongest, most long lasting fibers available. These fibers, developed by AstroTurf, have been the staple of the turf industry since 1965.

Polyethylene fibers have been widely accepted in sports turf since the late 1990's and are soft to the touch both in feel and appearance. The LSR (Low Slide Resistance) and XP (Extended Play) slit film fibers offer grass-like characteristics. Polyethylene fibers are also available in a new monofilament development which has a different look and feel.

The backing of AstroTurf's synthetic field systems is made from a patented environmentally friendly BioCel^TM product that takes high performance attributes of polyurethane including increased TurfBind, resistance to moisture, and increased life cycle and adds sustainability. BioCel^TM developed by Universal Textile Technologies (UTT) is over 60% green by backing weight.

AstroTurf is the only manufacture that has the technology to embed AlphaSan^® antimicrobial protection by Milliken into every fiber of our field systems. AlphaSan^® contributes in eliminating approximately 99% of microorganism contaminants from the synthetic turf. A clean and safe surface should by your number one priority.

Artificial Turf and How It Grew

When the Astrodome field opened, players and commentators greeted the plastic grass, newly renamed AstroTurf ^®, with a wide range of reactions.

Everyone agreed on one thing: The AstroTurf ^® was stunning to look at. “When you walked in, the stadium was beautiful,” recalled Houston third baseman Bob Aspromonte.

“It was as green as the jacket on the Masters golf champion,” said sportswriter Mikey Herskowitz. “It was as pure a green as you’d find on the most beautiful golf course in the world.”
