Harvard University installs the first Magic Carpet™ system.

Oakland Raiders play Philadelphia Eagles on AstroTurf® in Super Bowl XV at the Superdome. The Raiders defeated the Eagles 27 to 10 becoming the first Wild Card team to win a Super Bowl.

AstroTurf’s 1st Super Bowl

The Miami Dolphins played the Minnesota Vikings on AstroTurf® in Super Bowl VIII at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas. The Dolphins defeated the Vikings by the score of 24–7 winning their second consecutive Super Bowl.

Collegiate AstroTurf Installations

Noting the success of synthetic turf in the Houston AstroDome, the Universities of Notre Dame, North Carolina, Navy and Dartmouth add AstroTurf surfaces to their athletic programs.

AstroTurf® manufacturing facility opens in Dalton, Georgia and remains the corporate home and manufacturing location and primary distribution hub of AstroTurf.

Houston Astrodome

The first major installation of AstroTurf® at the Houston Astrodome indoor stadium for the Houston Astros when it was determined that natural turf could not survive under the low light intensities within a covered stadium.

Synthetic turf invented

The first experimental synthetic turf field as installed at the Waughtel-Howe Field House at the Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island. Initially called “Chemgrass”.
